Gestern ging es für mich zusammen mit 6 weiteren Internationals recht spontan in den Nordwesten von Nordirland. Nach dem Frühstück haben wir einen Bus nach Derry genommen, um dort für einen Tag die Stadt zu erkunden. Die zweitgrößte Stadt Nordirlands lädt mit ihrer nahezu vollständig erhaltenen Stadtmauer zu einem Spaziergang ein, während welchem man an vielen sehenswerten Orten vorbei kommt. Da Derry nicht sonderlich groß ist, haben wir beschlossen, unsere während der Fahrt eingeschlafenen Beine wieder aufzuwecken.
Yesterday 6 other lovely international students and I took the bus to the northwest of Northern Ireland. After breakfast we took the bus to Derry/Londonderry, to explore the city. Almost completely extanted, the wall around the city invites to take a stroll along the rampart while you pass many places worth seeing. As Derry isn't that big, we decided to wake up our tired legs after the bus ride and walk around.
Da wir in Belfast wohnen, bot es sich für uns an von Belfast aus mit dem Bus nach Derry zu fahren. Da das Bussystem in Nordirland sehr gut ausgebaut ist, kommen Busse nahezu jede halbe Stunde - Stunde. Eine Fahrt in den Norden dauert circa 2 Stunden und spart uns im Gegensatz zum Zug fahren eine ganze Stunde. Vor allem Samstags lockt Translink mit super Angeboten: Für circa 18 Pfund kann man den ganzen Tag mit Bus und Bahn durch Nordirland fahren.
Because we're living in Belfast we took the bus from the city centre to Derry. As the bus system is well extented in Northern Ireland, the buses come nearly every half an hour. Riding to Derry took us about 2 hours - that's one hour shorter than travelling by train. Especially on saturdays Translink offers to travel across NI by train and bus for about 18 Pounds.
Sehenswertes // What to see
Da wir relativ spontan nach Derry gefahren sind, haben wir uns nach unserer Ankunft in das Touristeninformationszentrum begeben, welches einen kleinen Fußweg vom Busbahnhof entfernt ist. Von dort aus sind wir auf die Stadtmauer gegangen und haben Derry einmal umrundet.
As the trip was only planned in the evening before, we hadn't got any idea of what places we can visit around Derry. That's why we went to the tourist information centre which is located only 5 minutes away from the bus station. From there we went up the wall and circled the city.
Von der Stadtmauer zugänglich, befindet sich die fast 400 Jahre alte St. Columb's Cathedral im inneren Stadtkern. Diese ist umgeben von einem Friedhof, auf welchem einige angesehene Leute von Belfast vor über 3 Jahrhunderten ihre Ruhe gefunden haben. Geht man die Mauer etwas weiter entlang, hat man einen guten Blick auf das im Westen der Stadt liegende Free Derry Monument. Von dort nur wenige Meter weiter kommt man der Stadtgeschichte näher. Im Museum of Free Derry wird die Stadtgeschichte Derrys' mit besonderem Blick auf den 'Bloody Sunday' erzählt. Etwas weiter der Mauer entlang, in Richtung Fluss, befindet sich zwischen dem Fluss und der Stadtmauer das Rathaus. Im Erdgeschoss dessen befindet sich ein kleiner Museumsrundgang, der die Entstehung der Stadt Derry erzählt. Nimmt man den Westausgang des Rathauses, so kann man nun den Fluss und neue Peace Bridge, über welche man in die andere Hälfte von Derry gelangt, bereits aus einiger Entfernung sehen.
Right beside the walls in the city centre the almost 400 years old St. Columb's Cathedral is located. It's encircled by a graveyard on which prestigious people of the town live in peace since over 3 centuries. When you continue walking along the rampart you can see the Free Derry Monument, that is located in the western part of the city. Just a few metres away from that, you can get a deeper insight into the town history of Derry. In the Museum of Free Derry the history is illustrated with focus on the 'Bloody Sunday', which is really interesting. Alongside the wall, located between the river and the wall, The Guildhall invites to explore the Plantation of Derry in former years. Taking the exit on the westwing, you can see the new-built Peace Bridge. Opened in 2011, it connects the both parts of the city.
Essen & Trinken* // Food and Drinks*
Obwohl wir uns morgens in der Küche fleißig Brote geschmiert haben, und extra vorher eingekauft haben, hat es uns zum Lunch in ein kleines Cafe auf der Mauer verschlagen. Im 'Bloom's Cafe: Café on the Walls' haben wir zusammen einen Tee getrunken, eine nette Unterhaltung mit der Besitzerin des Cafés geführt und super leckere, hausgebackene Scones gefuttert. Zum 'Nachtisch' haben wir von der lieben Dame jeweils einen Cupcake für unsere weitere Reise durch die Stadt geschenkt bekommen.
Zum Abend hin hat es uns zum Dinner ins 'The Diamond' gezogen. Erschlagen von der riesigen Speisekarte und der genau so großen Portionen am Nachbarstisch haben wir uns letztendlich für Fish & Chips entschieden :-D.

Although we prepared a lot of stuff to eat for the day in the kitchen that morning (and went shopping the other day), we went to a lovely Café called 'Blooms Café: Café on the walls'. Together with the owner of the café we drank a tea, talked a lot and ate very delicious housmade scones. For dessert we got treated a cupcake for each of us. In the evening we went to the restaurant 'The Diamond' to eat dinner before we drove back to Belfast. After seeing the huge menu and the just as huge servings on the table beside us, we decided to just get Fish & Chips, as we haven't been that hungry :-D.
